Kirkland Tool Library

What’s a Tool Library?

Imagine a place where you can access everything you need to tackle DIY projects, home repairs, gardening dreams, and creative endeavors—without breaking the bank or cluttering your garage. We could have that in Kirkland!

How Does It Work?

  1. Become a member: For a small annual fee you’d join our community of folks who want to get stuff done.

  2. Browse the collection: Explore a wide range of tools using a convenient web interface, from power drills and saws to gardening equipment, sewing machines, and more.

  3. Borrow what you need: Check out high quality, well-maintained tools for free, just like you would check out a book from the library.

  4. Return and repeat: Bring back the tools when you're done, and start planning your next project!

The Benefits

  • Save money: Access quality tools without the high cost of purchasing them.

  • Save space: Keep your home clutter-free and organized.

  • Learn new skills: Explore new hobbies and projects with confidence.

  • Build community: Connect with neighbors, share skills, and work together on projects.

  • Reduce waste: Promote sustainability by sharing resources and reducing the need for new tool production.

If you just want to be kept informed, please sign up for email updates using the link above. If you want to help make it happen, consider joining the #tool-library channel on the Liveable Kirkland Discord server.

  2. How much would the membership cost?
Probably somewhere around $60/year, or $80/year for access to a larger network of tool libraries. There would be a sliding scale for those less able to pay, and donations/volunteering could be used to offset the cost of a membership.

  3. What sorts of tools should we expect to find there?
All sorts. Hand tools, electric power tools, carpet cleaners, and more.

  4. Will there be things other than tools?
Yes! Think catering supplies for hosting a party, or consumables like fasteners and paint rollers, or even reclaimed building materials!
